Check out the map below. The states and counties in deep RED have some gas stations selling regular gas for over $4 a gallon. Field service inspectors in the red areas should be getting higher inspection fees than the rest of the nation because their expenses are higher. Inspectors need to start asking for higher fees. It costs more to live in California than many other states.
Firms are not going to just call you and say that they are going to increase your fees. You have to ask for more money. Show them the maps ... explain that business expenses are higher in California ... talk about the heavy traffic in the large California cities. Ask for higher inspection fees. The stronger your argument, the better the chances that you will get more money. Pretty please ... pretty please just does not work. Move to the higher quality firms (commercial inspection firms) who pay the higher fees. You are not going to get higher fees from a firm or another inspector advertising on Craig's List. The national mortgage field service firms will NOT increase your fees if you ask ... they will just hire someone else to take over your work at the same or a lower fee. Turnover in the mortgage segment it high. A new mortgage inspector will work for about 3 - 4 weeks before they discover that they are making no money while working longs days (and nights at the computer) while wearing out their vehicle.
If field services is going to be your job for the next five years, or longer, drive a Toyota Prius or another hybrid. High gas prices may be here for a long time as supplies of oil are DECREASING.
